Downtown Birmingham: Full Steam Ahead
As long-time downtown Birmingham enthusiasts, Southpace has been excited to see the many new development projects popping up all around our neighborhood in the past few years. The majority of these are residential mixed-use projects like 20 Midtown, LIV Parkside and the Pizitz Building. However, the folks at Alabama Power are working to bring Birmingham a new kind of mixed-use development at the Powell Avenue Steam Plant.
This beautiful, historic landmark that once powered our city for more than a century will soon give new life to Birmingham. A little more than a year ago, Alabama Power announced plans to develop the Powell Avenue Steam Plant into an entertainment and cultural center. Aspects of the development include restaurants, an entertainment area and possibly a museum.
Recently, we were pleased to learn that this project hasn’t lost its steam (pun intended). In fact, the Birmingham Design Review Committee approved the outdoor plaza plans for the steam plant this past week, which included a pavilion, fountains and food truck park.
After seeing these plans and momentum, we’re looking forward to seeing the “new energy” this project will bring to our community.
